“Morning Sean,” Amber said in her usual chipper tone when I walked through the front doors to the office. I greeted her with a nod, and she followed me, as per usual, around the corner and into my office. “You have a conference call at nine thirty, a business lunch with Cal Hubert at noon, and…” She paused as she scanned to the bottom of her agenda. “And that’s it actually. Besides normal work-related things.”

“Great. Thanks.”

Amber lowered her agenda and watched me as I went to my desk and sat down.

“Do you want a coffee?” she asked.

I shook my head. “Nah. I’m good.”

Amber wasn’t taking her cue to leave. She hovered at the door before pushing it closed and turning back to me. “I know it’s probably not my business, but is everything okay? You don’t seem like yourself this morning.”

“It’s fine. I just didn’t sleep well. Thanks.”

“All right,” she said. Then she opened the door again and stepped out. “Let me know if you need anything.” She closed the door behind her, and I watched her go back to her desk. As soon as she sat down, she lifted her gaze to meet mine.

I felt like a fish in a tank. I got up and closed the blinds on all my windows so I could have some privacy. Then I went back to my desk and dropped into my chair with a huff.

Tyler hadn’t been home when I woke up in the morning. All of his shit was still there, but he was nowhere to be seen, and I couldn’t help but wonder if he’d snuck out somewhere in the middle of the night to pour liquor down his gullet and was now facedown in a ditch somewhere sleeping it off.

Or worse.

I’d put off talking to him long enough. When he came back, I was going to have to sit him down and try to figure out a way to get back to a place where we could talk like we used to. He had to know I cared.

There was a soft knock on my office door. “Come in,” I called.

I looked up when Lana stepped into my office. She pressed the door closed softly behind her and turned back to me, her briefcase in front of her.

She was wearing a dark pink dress that hugged her body like a glove. Her hair was up in a coiled bun, and a gold choker winked at her throat. Her lips were painted a similar shade of pink to her dress, and they were pursed together as she stepped forward and motioned at one of the empty chairs across from me. “Do you mind if I sit for a moment?”

“Go ahead,” I said, motioning for her to sit down.

She took her seat and put her briefcase down against the leg of my desk. She licked her lips and ran her hands down her thighs before she met my eyes. “I’m sorry I had to run out of the office like that the other day.
